Just Do It

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen:

It's my great honor to give you the speech.

As is known to all, no one lives alone in the world, there are many things around us, such as the fresh air, the green trees, the lovely animals, the beautiful flowers and so on, with which we can live in harmony and enjoy an excellent life.

How much do you know about our environment? Do you have a good knowledge of it? Maybe you think it is quite important to protect our environment, but have you taken an active part in it?

Water plays an important role in our daily life. We can't live without water ever for one day. We use water for washing fruits, cleaning houses, raising animals and many other things. As a poet puts it, water is to human what a nest is to a bird; where there is water, there is life. To enjoy a better life, every one of us should make every effort to protect the environment.

Many years ago, when I was still a little boy, there was a river flowing across our village. The water was so clear that a great number of animals live in it, like small fished, naughty shrimps, lovely crabs and other living animals. They were lovely and pretty and I always caught them with my brothers in summer. Everyday, after the sun went down, we couldn't wait to go to the river. It was not only because of the happiness of catching them, but also because of the clean water, the icy water.

The river is not just a paradise of us children, but a source of life for everyone who lives in the village. But nowadays, I feel so sorry that people didn't protect the precious river. On the contrary, they did lots of things to pollute it, the water became dirty and smelly, and a great many animals died from the poisonous water. What's more, rubbishes float on water here and there. The river became a big dustbin.

What did we do? Who made the river become that dirty and smelly? What will the river be like after three years? I can't imagine, just sad, just angry and worried. It is just a corner of an iceberg. We are also facing air pollution, noise pollution and water pollution. Our health and future are being greatly threatened.

Because of the pollution, forests are being destroyed gradually;

Because of the pollution, lots of green hills have changed into wasteland;

Because of the pollution, sandstorms strike us now and then.

Because of the pollution, floods come to our home again and again!

Dear friends, it's never too late to protect our environment. I do hope all the people could realize the terrible result of not caring about our environment. Please take care of the forests and plant more trees instead of cutting them down. Please pick up the rubbishes in the river but not throw them in. please protect the animals living in water instead of pouring waster water into the river.

Take action from now on, just this minute. Start from the little things right under our nose. Protecting the environment is protecting ourselves. Do not doubt our power. What we need is just to do it. If we take action now, I'm sure the hills will be greener. If we take action now, I'm sure the river will be cleaner. If we take action now, I'm sure our future will be more beautiful!
